CBC COVERAGE OF WORLD CUP 2010

A lot of discussion with our radio show recently about the coverage of Confederations Cup on CBC. A lot of anger with the fact that many of the games were not seen on the main network. Instead, these matches were broadcast on CBC BOLD. A channel way high up on the cable, a premium paid channel and one that many viewers don't actually have. The worry was that CBC would broadcast the World Cup games BOLD. Well listeners, viewers, readers... do not worry.

After speaking with CBC Executive Director of CBC Sports, Scott Moore, and then chatting with Trevor Pilling, the Executive Producer of Soccer on CBC, have told me the following, "All games of the 2010 FIFA World Cup will be live in HD on CBC Television (Main Net). In addition to all of the live games, each day we will repeat one game in Prime time (7pm in all regions) as well as another game will repeat late night (11pm in all regions). All games will have another repeat on bold and ALL GAMES will be streamed live on CBCSports.ca as well as being available on demand. This will be the first time all games of the FIFA World Cup will be available on conventional broadcast television as well as the first time any of the games will be available online."

Now, during the final matches of the group stage, games are played at the same time. When this occurs, "the overlap games will appear simultaneously on CBC and
bold, the one seen live on bold will be replayed immediately on CBC once
the first game is done."

So there you have, your coverage is set for the World Cup on CBC next year. I was also told that CBC may be providing unprecedented mobile coverage and that that their broadcast team will include the usual suspects of Scott Russell, Nigel Reed and Jason deVos along with new names. Those names are still in negotiations.

To listen to the Full-Time interview with CBC's Trevor Pilling, download the podcast here.

What did you think of CBC's coverage and what do you think of the upcoming World Cup?

CBC Coverage is horrible!!! i want TSN and Sportsnet to play both games simultaneously so i can see them both live!!! not watch one later after garbage CBC tv shows!!!!!!!!

I was really hoping that TSN/Sportsnet were going to cover the World Cup again like they did in 2006. Their coverage in 2006 was excellent and they again proved how well they can work together with the 2010 Winter Olympics as the coverage was, again, fantastic.

If CBC can provide the kind of coverage of the World Cup like Sportsnet/TSN did then I will be happy. However, I'm not too happy with the commentators that will be doing it with CBC.

Thankyou CBC for finally recognising soccer as a favorite sport among Canada's imigrants. I bet more Canadian's watch the World cup than watch the Stanley cupfinals. Another sport Canada isn't playing in again. Go England!!!!

Very disappointing commentating on CBC (apart from those actually calling the game). Why don't they get people who know football and know how to talk about the game? Also, coverage should be on a full sports network, not on the main CBC network.

JOHN HELM is particularly bad, he doesn't comment on the play, he just blathers on and on and the CAMERA WORK FROM SOCCER CITY JUNE 17TH was ATROCIOUS! Aerial views !!! so far away you can't see the players or the play - circling camera shots - very few close-ups - shots on the WRONG players - missing important action - i could go on - i have to turn off the sound to get through his game comments and dread the future coverage by this "crew" in Johannesburg - ie. Brazil, Spain,Germany, Italy; THIS IS PAINFUL - GET PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND THE GAME AND KNOW HOW TO SHOW IT AND DESCRIBE THE ACTION. HOPE CBC DOESN'T GET 2014.

I've been following this event for the last 20 years. I am very disappointed with the coverage on CBC and feel that the station is just not delivering for the public. I hope they don't have the bid for the next WC or Euro Cup for that matter.

I think the CBC coverage is decent, they need more reporters live in S. Africa. Suggesting TSN and Sportsnet is better is a joke. Football (soccer) belongs on a mainstream station, just like the Olympics. Glad viewers are not held hostage into buy CTV speciality properties to what should be an international institution.

These comments about CBCs coverage being bad and not liking what John Helms does is rediculous! He is pithy and eloquent and makes thoughtful comments about the play and the way the game is played. And the panel doing the analysis between games is good too, even showing replays of players creating space for others to shoot. ABC/ESPN is okay, but CBCs is better. And in case the people blogging don't get it, everyone is seen the same feed and replays, so it has nothing to do with the networks.
