Onstad announces his retirement as a player

Canadian soccer legend Pat Onstad has officially made the switch from the active roster to the coaching staff. The 42-year old Major League Soccer goalkeeper has announced his retirement from Houston Dynamo to become an assistant coach alongside Chad Ashton with D.C. United.

Onstad spent 23 years as a member of Canada's national team, having made his debut at age 20 on 18 February 1988 in Hamilton, Bermuda. His last international appearance was 24 May 2010 in front of 66,000 fans at River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In all, he made 57 appearances for his country, a national record for goalkeepers. He also established national records for most clean sheets (21) as well as most clean sheets in FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers (8).

"Pat is an inspiration to many through his dedication to his profession and for his achievements in the game," said national coach Stephen Hart. "Never hesitant to answer the call to represent Canada, Pat remains a model to many aspiring young players."

Onstad participated in one FIFA Confederations Cup (2001), six cycles of FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers (18 matches), and five CONCACAF Gold Cups (1993, 1996, 2000, 2003 and 2007). He helped Canada win the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000, the country's second confederation championship.

In Major League Soccer, Onstad won three MLS Cups, one with the San Jose Earthquakes (2003) and two more after the franchise moved and was renamed the Houston Dynamo (2006 and 2007). He was MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2003 and 2005, was part of the MLS Best XI in 2003 and 2005, and produced the MLS Save of the Year in 2009.

Canada wins Brazil tournament

Christine Sinclair has done it again. This time, down to 10 players with less than 10 minutes on the clock, Sinclair fired a cracker of a goal from the top of the 18-yard box to clinch the Torneio Internacional Cidade de São Paulo in Brazil. The final score on this day was 2:2 between Canada and host Brazil. Canada won the Four Nations tournament, though, with the greater goal difference over four matches: both teams posted two wins and two draws, but Canada was +6 while Brazil was +4.

Josée Bélanger opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, shortly before the end of the first half. Marta then scored a pair of goals in the second half, the second of which was on a penalty following a hand ball and ejection to defender Marie-Eve Nault. Sinclair scored the final goal in the 83rd minute.

Canada went down to 10 players in the 71st minute following Nault's ejection. She had already been shown one yellow card in the 65th minute, so when a direct shot from just a few metres in front of her smacked her hand, the referee called the penalty and Nault was sent to the dressing room. Marta immediately made it 2-1 on the penalty, directing her kick into the left corner of the net past Canadian goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé.

Down to 10 players, Canada never gave up. In the last 20 minutes, Canada created three good chances, including the terrific goal by Sinclair in the 83rd minute. Brazil also created chances at the other end, but Labbé was too good for Brazil to regain the lead.

Labbé was strong throughout the tournament, starting three of four matches including both against Brazil. Her play in the previous match won her another start in the 19 December championship final; her play in the opening 15 minutes of the final confirmed the coach's decision.

With the exception of a scoring opportunity by Sinclair in the opening minute, it was all Brazil with the chances in the first 15 minutes. Labbé and her Canadian defence squashed several opportunities created by Brazil's dangerous attackers such as Marta and Gabriela.

As the first half progressed, Canada found a way to turn the tide in their favour, finally quieting the crowd of 17,264 in the 43rd minute with the header by Bélanger. It was a Tancredi cross from the left side that led to the Bélanger goal.

Brazil's first goal came in the 55th minute after Marta blew through the Canadian defence. Ahead of her opponents in the Canadian box, she fired a shot past Labbé for a 1-1 draw. Her second goal came 17 minutes later on the penalty kick.

In the championship final, Canada's starting XI featured Stephanie Labbé in goal, Rhian Wilkinson, Emily Zurrer, Candace Chapman and Marie-Eve Nault at defence, and Diana Matheson, Kaylyn Kyle, Carmelina Moscato, Christine Sinclair, Josée Bélanger and Melissa Tancredi from midfield up through to the attack. Coach Morace's two substitutions were Robyn Gayle in the 74th minute (for Chapman) and Chelsea Stewart in the 85th minute (for Tancredi).

Brazil's starting XI featured Andreia in goal, Aline, Renata Costa, Erika and Rosana at defence, and Fabiana, Thais, Ester, Gabriela, Formiga and Marta from the midfield up through to the attack. Brazil's three substitutions were Marina in the 30th minute (for injured Renata Costa) and Danielle and Andrei Rosa both in the 46th minute (for Erika and Thais).

Sinclair's goal in the 83rd minute was the 13th of her season in 16 matches. Sinclair now has 112 goals on her international career. Canada, meanwhile, tied a national record with its 10th straight match without a loss (eight wins and two draws). It also finished 2010 with its best statistical record in Association history (13 wins, three draws and two losses).

Canada to face Brazil in Sunday's final

Canada will face Brazil in women's international soccer this Sunday 19 December 2010. The two sides will face each other in the championship final of the Torneio Internacional Cidade de São Paulo. The match kicks off at 17.00 local (14.00 ET / 11.00 PT).

Canada and Brazil have already met once in the group phase of this tournament. On Wednesday 15 December, Canada and Brazil played to a 0:0 draw. As it was the third match of the group phase and both teams had already qualified for the final, Canada played a young squad with much less experience than Brazil. Canada still came away with the result and finished first in the group.

For the championship final, Canada is expected to rotate back in some of its older, experienced players against Brazil.

"Brazil's system can be difficult to understand, but they play a form of man to man," said Canadian coach Carolina Morace. "They are tactically fantastic and very good with the ball on their feet."

Canada and Brazil share an all-time record of three wins, two draws and three losses against each other. Canada is currently ranked 9th on the FIFA/Coca-Cola Women's World Ranking while Brazil is ranked third. Brazil has been the runner-up at each of the last two major FIFA women's

tournaments: a silver medal behind USA at the 2008 Women's Olympic Football Tournament and a silver medal behind Germany at the FIFA Women's World Cup China 2007.

Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and presenting sponsor is Teck, is undefeated in nine matches (eight wins, one draw) and has already tied a team record with 13 wins this 2010 season (13-2-2). In November, Canada won a gold medal at the CONCACAF Women's World Cup Qualifier, thus qualifying for a fifth-consecutive FIFA Women's World Cup Germany 2011. Along with the team's preparations for 2011, the Canadian Soccer Association is a bidding nation for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2015.

Atiba Hutchinson is the male selection for 2010 Canadian Players of the Year award

The Canadian Soccer Association announced today that Atiba Hutchinson is the male selection for the 2010 Canadian Players of the Year award. Hutchinson was honoured in a vote shared by Canadian media (50%) and Canadian coaches who have taken the Canadian Soccer Association’s national course at the B and A levels (50%).

Hutchinson of Brampton, ON wins the award for the first time. His co-winner Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, BC – announced yesterday – is a six-time winner of the prize.

"This is a fantastic achievement for Atiba and well deserved," said Canadian national coach Stephen Hart. "He has worked hard for what he has achieved. He always answers the call to represent his country and he is a terrific ambassador. I wish him well and urge him to continue enjoying his soccer."

Hutchinson had another big year at the club level in Europe. He split the year between F.C. København in Denmark and PSV Eindhoven in Netherlands. He rounded out a stellar career in Denmark by winning the Dansk Fodbold Award as the top player in the Danish Superleague. He then joined PSV Eindhoven with whom he has featured regularly while keeping the club first in the Eredivise standings through mid December. In UEFA Europa League, he helped PSV Eindhoven finish first in Group I and progress to the following round.

At the national level, Hutchinson celebrated his eighth season in Canada by making his 50th appearance in a memorable trip to Kyiv, Ukraine. Hutchinson scored a goal in that 2:2 draw on 8 October. He was also in Canada's lineup for the 2:1 victory over Honduras at Stade Saputo in Montréal, QC on 7 September, in all playing three matches for Canada in 2010.

While the media across the country and coaches from the community levels to national teams honoured Hutchinson and Sinclair as the top national players, Canadian coaches honoured two pairs of teenagers earlier this week in other 2010 player award announcements. Ethan Gage (Cochrane, AB) and Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, ON) were named co-winners of the Canadian U-20 Players of the Year award while Bryce Alderson (Kitchener, ON) and Diamond Simpson (Mississauga, ON) were named co-winners of the Canadian U-17 Players of the Year award.

Fan voting for the 2010 CanadaSoccer.com Fans’ Choices, meanwhile, runs through 19 December 2010. Fans can still make their two selections (one male, one female) at CanadaSoccer.com.

Christine Sinclair is the female choice for 2010 Canadian Players of the Year award

The Canadian Soccer Association announced today that Christine Sinclair is the female selection for the 2010 Canadian Players of the Year award. Sinclair was honoured in a vote shared by Canadian media (50%) and Canadian coaches who have taken the Canadian Soccer Association’s national course at the B and A levels (50%).

Sinclair of Burnaby, BC wins the award for the sixth-consecutive year. Her 2010 co-winner - a selection from the men’s national team - will be announced on Friday.

"Christine is a complete soccer player," said Canadian national head coach Carolina Morace. "She is smart, fast, she has good vision of the game and she is able to read the match excellently. She puts her skill and talent into the team and this allows the team to grow. I’m very proud to coach her."

In 2010, Sinclair enjoyed perhaps her finest season, winning titles for both her club and country. She steered FC Gold Pride from worst to first in Women’s Professional Soccer, scoring a pair of goals in the championship final in October. She then led Canada to a gold medal at the CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifier, scoring the lone goal in the championship final against Mexico in Cancún, Mexico.

In her second season with FC Gold Pride, Sinclair scored 10 goals and led the league with 9 assists. She formed a formidable duo with strike partner Marta as FC Gold Pride scored a league record 46 goals. Sinclair also played in the WPS All-Star Game and helped her team improve from a 4-6-10 record in their inaugural season to a 16-5-3 record in 2010 (wins-draws-losses).

In her 11th season with the Canadian national team, captain Sinclair has already scored 12 goals in 15 matches, with one last match to be played on 19 December. She has helped the team tie a national record with 13 wins (13-2-2) and establish a record with eight consecutive wins from 30 September to 12 December. She helped Canada win the Cyprus Women’s Cup and CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifier as well as reach the final of Brazil’s Torneio Internacional Cidade de São Paulo.

Also in 2010, Sinclair became Canada’s all-time leader in appearances (she now has 147) and she became just the 10th player to eclipse the 100-goal plateau in women’s international soccer. With 111 goals to her credit, she ranks sixth all-time on the international stage. She was again a finalist for the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year.

Earlier this week, Sinclair’s national teammate Jonelle Filigno was named a co-winner of the Canadian U-20 Players of the Year award (along with Ethan Gage) while Diamond Simpson was named a co-winner of the Canadian U-17 Players of the Year award (along with Bryce Alderson). Sinclair’s co-winner of the 2010 Canadian Players of the Year award will be announced on Friday.

Canada wins group phase after 0:0 draw with Brazil

Canada played to a 0:0 draw in women's international soccer on Wednesday 15 December 2010 against the world's number-three ranked Brazil. With the draw, Canada finished first place in its group with seven points and a +6 goal differential at the Torneio Internacional Cidade de São Paulo. Canada finished first ahead of host Brazil who also collected seven points in three matches, but with only a +4 goal differential.

"I think we played our game," said coach Carolina Morace. "We wanted to get a result and our players did very, very well. They were aggressive and they didn't lose their position in a new formation."

With Canada already qualified for the final, coach Morace use a young squad and a new formation that "we just told them yesterday what they would have to do." The Canadian players responded magnificently and shut down the sometimes tricky Brazilian squad for 90 full minutes.

Canada and Brazil will meet again in four days on 19 December in the championship final (17.00 local / 14.00 ET / 11.00 PT).

Canada's goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé was the star of the game, but she had the help of the entire team including experienced defenders Emily Zurrer and Robyn Gayle.
"It was not just me, it was the whole team," said Labbé. "We just stayed composed and focus for the whole game. Any little mental lapse against Brazil and you can get beat one-on-one."

Making her third career start (second in the tournament), Labbé was sharp from the get go. One of her big saves came in the 21st minute when she collected the ball after it deflected off the post. Brazil could have easily scored on the play, but Canada's Diamond Simpson had rushed back and tipped the ball before it hit the Canadian post.

In the 28th minute, Labbé made a good save on Marta, one of several on the night.

Labbé remained strong in the second half while Brazil maintained pressure and created more chances. In the 68th minute, a sudden yet powerful shot from distance by substitute Gabriela was tipped over the crossbar by Labbé.

About 10 minutes later, a sneaky pass from the right by star Marta was stopped by Zurrer and Labbé. Zurrer was right on top of the Brazilian forward for whom the pass was intended.

"All game long, Brazil did well knocking low balls into the box," said Labbé. "We didn't let them finished."

At the other end, one of Canada's best chances came in the 85th minute on a free kick following a pair of cautions to Brazil. The direct shot by Canadian substitute Carmelina Moscato, however, was stopped. In the last five minutes, neither side could break the deadlock and the match ultimately finished in a 0:0 draw.

Morace started three teenagers as well as two 20-year old players in this match. Her starting XI featured Stephanie Labbé in goal, Brittany Timko, Emily Zurrer, Robyn Gayle and Shannon Woeller (20) at defence, and Laura Chénard (19), Christina Julien, Amélia Pietrangelo (17), Chelsea Stewart (20), Brooke McCalla and Diamond Simpson (17) from midfield through to the attack. Morace's three substitutions were Carmelina Moscato and Marie-Eve Nault at the half (for Timko and McCalla) and Diana Matheson in the 78th minute (for Julien).

As for Brazil, its starting XI featured Andreia in goal, Aline, Renata Costa, Erika and Rosana at defence, and Fabiana, Ester, Thais, Danielle, Francielle and Marta from the midfield up through to the attack. Brazil's three substitutions were Grazielle in the 16th minute (for injured Danielle), Gabriela in the 66th minute, and Marina in the 76th minute.

Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and presenting sponsor is Teck, is undefeated in nine straight matches dating back to the 30 September home victory against China PR at BMO Field (eight wins and one draw). Its 2010 record is 13 wins, two draws and two losses.

Of note in this match, Pietrangelo, Simpson and Woeller all made their first-ever starts at the international "A" level. Six players from today's Canadian lineup still have less than five international appearances to their record: Pietrangelo and Simpson with two each, Chénard with three, Labbé and Woeller with four, and McCalla with five.

Marshall Selected by Colorado in Re-Entry Process; Seattle Trades for Draft Pick

RENTON, WASH. - Seattle Sounders FC defender Tyrone Marshall was selected by the Colorado Rapids with the 16th overall pick in Stage 2 of the Major League Soccer Re-Entry Process, the club announced today.

Marshall, 36, has appeared in 46 matches with 39 starts in his two seasons in Seattle. Obtained in a trade with Toronto FC on February 10, 2009, Marshall was voted by his teammates as 2009 Defender of the Year, anchoring a defense which tied for first in goals allowed per game (0.97) and second in shutouts (10). He also contributed three goals and three assists.

"First and foremost we want to thank Tyrone for his service to the club for the last two years," said Adrian Hanauer, Sounders FC Owner and General Manager. "He was a contributor and a leader and we wouldn't have had the success that we had without him."

Marshall will enter the 2011 season ranked 15th in MLS all-time regular season games played (294), 9th amongst active players. He is 17th in minutes played (23,349), 10th amongst active players. A two-time MLS All-Star (2003, 05), Marshall was twice named Defender of the Year by the L.A. Galaxy (2004, 2005) and he was a finalist for MLS Defender of the Year in 2005. He has 70 caps and five goals for the Jamaican National Team.

Sounders FC acquired goalkeeper Chris Seitz from the Philadelphia Union in Stage 2 of the MLS Re-Entry Process and traded him to FC Dallas for a fourth round SuperDraft pick in 2012.

Travelling Fans to Receive Access to 500 tickets in Northwest Markets

Major League Soccer has approved a plan for the supporters groups from the Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders FC, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC to purchase up to 500 tickets for away matches against their Cascadia rivals in 2011.

Although detailed operational plans are still being developed, the 500 tickets will be sold to each of the visiting clubs, who will then allocate those tickets to their travelling supporters groups.

“The Pacific Northwest derbies have a tremendous history dating back to the 70’s and we are pleased that all three clubs, with the support of Major League Soccer, have come together to create what will be an exciting and safe environment for all fans to enjoy,” said Paul Barber, chief executive officer, Whitecaps FC. “Supporters culture in soccer is special and unique, and today’s agreement is a positive step in the right direction.”

"The approved plan to allocate 500 tickets for visiting supporters will help grow a rivalry that is unique to this region," said Joe Roth, Sounders FC owner. "The three clubs, along with Major League Soccer, are committed to fostering local rivalries as well as providing visiting supporters an opportunity to support their clubs on the road."

The rivalry between the three clubs dates back to the old North American Soccer League. Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps entered that league in 1974, while Portland Timbers followed suit in 1975. The Pacific Northwest rivalry was rekindled in the 1990s when the clubs competed in North America's second division professional leagues.

Whitecaps FC and Timbers will join MLS in 2011 as the 17th and 18th clubs; Sounders FC made its MLS debut in 2009. The complete 2011 MLS schedule will be released in the coming months. Prior to the start of the 2011 season, MLS will announce League-wide guidelines for travelling supporters.

** I think this is a fantastic move, here's why:
- Adds a little spice between the northwest opponents
- creates a rivalry among the fans
- helps to build traveling supporters
- the limited tickets (500) means it'll be a tough ticket to get. Plus, it looks better than having the potential of 1000 tickets available and only 400 going.

Canada wins 1:0 over Mexico

Canada won its third match in less than six weeks against Mexico, this time a 1:0 victory at the Torneio Internacional Cidade de São Paulo. Captain Christine Sinclair scored the lone goal of the match - her fourth goal in three matches dating back to the 2010 CONCACAF Women's World Cup Qualifier championship final.

Goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc posted the clean sheet - her fifth-straight clean sheet and eighth of the season. Canada remains in first place with a perfect six points in the four-country tournament. Canada's last group opponent will be Brazil, who also have six points but a weaker goal differential (Canada is +6 while Brazil is +4).

"It was a tough match because Mexico had to win," said Canadian coach Carolina Morace.

Canada will close out the group phase against Brazil while Mexico will close out against Netherlands on Wednesday. With Mexico and Netherlands eliminated from the top two spots in the standings, it will also be Canada against Brazil in the Sunday final.

Along with the Sinclair goal midway through the first half, Canada had two other big chances to score in the first 45 minutes. Before the goal, Sinclair hit a post; late in the first half, a Melissa Tancredi penalty kick was stopped by Mexican goalkeeper Erika Vanegas. Canada was awarded the penalty after Diana Matheson was fouled inside the box.

Sinclair's goal was scored in the 22nd minute, nearly half way through the first half. She put a chip ball past the goalkeeper for the 111th goal of her international career.

Canada's starting XI featured Karina LeBlanc in goal, Rhian Wilkinson, Emily Zurrer, Carmelina Moscato and Marie-Eve Nault at defence, and Kaylyn Kyle, Diana Matheson, Christina Julien, Josée Bélanger, Christine Sinclair and Melissa Tancredi from midfield to attack. Whitecaps don't offer MLS contracts to Bellisomo, Forko and Thomas

WHITECAPS FC DO NOT OFFER CONTRACTS TO BELLISOMO, FORKO, AND THOMAS

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC confirmed today that the club will not offer Major League Soccer contracts to defenders Luca Bellisomo and Willis Forko, as well as goalkeeper Simon Thomas.

"We wish to thank Luca, Willis, and Simon for their contributions to the club," said Whitecaps FC head coach Teitur Thordarson. "All three players were very professional during their time here, not only in their efforts on the pitch, but also in their commitments to the community as well. We wish them all the very best for the future."

Bellisomo, 24, leaves Whitecaps FC after three seasons with the club at the North American second division level. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, the native of Coquitlam, BC, made 37 total appearances during the 2010 campaign for 3,091 minutes of action. He scored two goals and recorded one assist for five points during the season. In total, Bellisomo appeared in 64 matches for 5,066 minutes of action with the 'Caps.

Forko, 28, re-joined Whitecaps FC midway through the 2010 season following a two-and-a-half year spell in Norway. Born in Monrovia, Liberia, the native of Houston, Texas, started all but one of his nine Whitecaps FC appearances for 743 minutes of action. The left fullback had a previous spell with the 'Caps in early 2008 before moving to Norwegian outfit FK Bodø/Glimt.

Whitecaps FC sign Dunfield and Janicki

WHITECAPS FC SIGN CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL AND 2010 USSF D-2 DEFENDER OF THE YEAR

VANCOUVER, BC – Following the completion of their six-week offseason training camp this week, Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today the signings of midfielder Terry Dunfield and centre back Greg Janicki to the club's Major League Soccer roster. Per club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Both Dunfield and Janicki were members of Whitecaps FC during the club's final season at the North American second division level in 2010. The pair joins goalkeeper Jay Nolly, right fullback Wes Knight, and midfielder Philippe Davies in making the transition from Vancouver's United States Soccer Federation Division-2 Professional League (USSF D-2) team to their MLS squad for the 2011 season.

"Terry and Greg are very professional in their approach and bring a lot of character to our roster," said Whitecaps FC head coach Teitur Thordarson. "Terry has played soccer at a very high level in England and we will benefit from the experience he will add to our team, as we enter our inaugural season in MLS. Greg is a player with huge potential and continues to mature as a centre back. His performances last season gave us the confidence to add him to our MLS roster."

Dunfield, 28, joins the Whitecaps FC MLS squad after a successful half-season with Vancouver, having first joined his hometown club on August 10, 2010. The native of Vancouver, BC, started all but one of his 11 appearances in the USSF D-2 Pro League for 929 minutes of action, scoring two goals in the process. Before returning to the 'Caps, the midfielder spent much of his career in England, having started as a youth trainee at English Premier League giants Manchester City FC.

A Canadian international, Dunfield has appeared for his country at the U-20, U-23 Olympic, and senior international levels. This included appearances in all three of Canada's group matches at the 2001 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina and an appearance in the second round of CONCACAF Olympic qualifying in November 2003. His senior international debut came on May 29, 2010, when Canada claimed a 1-1 friendly draw in Venezuela. Dunfield performed well in central midfield during his last international appearance, as Canada defeated Honduras 2-1 in a friendly in Montreal, Quebec, on September 7, 2010.

Janicki, 26, returns to MLS after an impressive 2010 campaign with Whitecaps FC. The native of New Baltimore, Michigan, earned the USSF D-2 Pro League Defensive Player of the Year award, and was named to the league's Best XI, after helping the 'Caps surrender a league low 22 goals during the regular season. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound defender started all but one of his 33 total appearances for 2,953 minutes of action. Janicki also finished in a three-way tie at the top of the club's goalscoring charts with four goals, with two of his goals being match winners away from home.

Prior to joining Whitecaps FC, the former Michigan State University standout was a member of MLS outfit D.C. United from 2008 to 2009. The centre back made 10 regular season appearances during his two seasons with the Washington, D.C., outfit. He also appeared for United in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 editions of the CONCACAF Champions League, while he also made five starts in United's run to the 2009 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup final.

Canada wins opener over Netherlands

Canada picked right up where it left off, dominating Netherlands 5:0 in its opening match at the four nation Torneio Internacional Cidade de São Paulo competition on Thursday night in Brazil. The match was Canada’s first since winning the 2010 CONCACAF Women’s Championship just four weeks earlier. Canadian stars Christine Sinclair and Diana Matheson each notched a pair of goals and Josee Belanger added one of her own in Canada’s comprehensive performance. Steph Labbé earned the clean sheet for Canada in only her third appearance for the national side.

Canadian Captain Sinclair scored the lone goal in the first half, converting the 109th goal of her international career in the 14th minute.

Entering the second half with a slender 1-0 advantage, Canada exploded for four second half goals. Seven minutes after the restart, Sinclair set-up Canada’s first goal of the half as she latched onto a great through ball before rounding the Netherlands goalkeeper and centering for a wide-open Josee Belanger to fire into the empty goal from 12 yards out.

Scoring a second goal early in the second half seemed to relax the Canadian side as it pinged passes around the pitch freely while ruthlessly attacking the tiring Dutch defence. Four minutes after doubling its advantage Canada earned a penalty kick and Matheson stepped up to calmly fire low to the goalkeeper’s left, giving Canada a three goal lead.

In the 66th minute Matheson scored her second of the match in superb fashion. Running onto the ball, Matheson struck a sweet left footed shot from 24 yards out which curled onto the far post on a bounce and into the Netherlands goal with the goalkeeper helpless to intervene. For Matheson, who has been playing in world class form, the goal was similar in quality, if differently executed, to the game winning goal she scored in Canada’s 1:0 victory over New Zealand in the 2010 Cyprus Cup final in March.

Sinclair put a bookend on the Canadian rout reacting quickly to a rebound from her own shot in the 75th minute and knocking it past the prone goalkeeper.

Canada will now prepare to face Mexico in its next match on Sunday 12 December. Sunday’s match will mark the third time the two CONCACAF rivals have played in the past five weeks. Canada won both of the previous meetings.

The two other teams at the competition, Mexico and Brazil, faced off immediately following the Canada-Netherlands match in Sao Paulo.

Carolina Morace’s starting eleven against Netherlands featured a 4-2-3-1 formation with Labbé in goal, Rhian Wilkinson, Carmelina Moscato, Emily Zurrer, and Marie-Eve Nault in defence, Matheson, Kaylyn Kyle, in holding midfield, and Belanger, Sinclair, and Christina Julien supporting Melissa Tancredi in attack. Second half substitutes included Robyn Gayle, Chelsea Stewart, Amélia Pietrangelo, and Diamond Simpson. Both Pietrangelo and Simpson earned their first national team appearances in the win.

WHITECAPS FC LEGEND CARL VALENTINE RETURNS TO THE CLUB

VANCOUVER, BC – In the build-up to Major League Soccer in 2011, Vancouver Whitecaps FC have appointed club legend Carl Valentine to the role of Whitecaps FC club ambassador and staff coach.

One of the most popular figures to play for the Blue and White, the 52-year-old's new role will cover a wide area of responsibilities on the business and technical side of the club.

"I'm excited to be back on board again with the club, and at such a great time in their history," said Valentine. "Whitecaps FC have been a major part of my life, having been the reason I left England to come to Vancouver many years ago. To have this opportunity to serve the club in these new roles is a great fit for me. I'm really looking forward to it."

As club ambassador, Valentine will make appearances at various Whitecaps FC events. They include game-day hosting at Whitecaps FC home matches, as well as appearances at club executive, partner, community, and promotional events. A Whitecaps FC alumnus, Valentine will also serve as alumni program coordinator, where he will help develop and manage the club's alumni engagement program.

Valentine will also provide insight and coverage on Whitecaps FC as one of the club's online video hosts and as a guest website columnist. This will include video reports and features on Whitecaps FC during the season.

As a staff coach, the former Canadian international will also continue in his role as a specialist coach with the men's team, having worked with the midfielders in Teitur Thordarson's squad during their current offseason training camp. He will also provide his expertise to the game's future talent as a support coach with the club's Residency and Prospects programs, as well as various camps and clinics during the year.

A speedy and skillful player, Valentine became a fan favourite during the club's days in the old North American Soccer League (NASL), Canadian Soccer League (CSL), and United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL-1). The native of Manchester, England, was an integral part of the Whitecaps FC side that won the 1979 NASL championship title, while he was also a key member of the Vancouver 86ers squad that claimed four-straight CSL championship titles between 1988 and 1991. Valentine is Vancouver's all-time leader in appearances with 409, while he sits third on the club's career points list with 65 goals and 69 assists for 199 points. Between 1994 and 1999, Valentine served as Whitecaps FC head coach.

Though born in the United Kingdom, Valentine made 31 international appearances for Canada between 1985 and 1993, and was part of the squad that appeared at the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Making his international debut in St. John's, Newfoundland, on September 14, 1985, Valentine is renowned for assisting on both goals in the decisive 2-1 victory over Honduras that took Canada to Mexico '86.

The U18s won their fifth straight, topping South Carolina United, 3-0, in their opening game on Saturday. Ryan Hermann earned the shutout and Troy Peterson scored twice-including one from the spot-and Yordan Rivera added a third. The brace raised Peterson's goal haul to four goals over three matches.

In their final tournament game on Tuesday, the U18s scored three of their goals late in each half in beating Lonestar Academy of Texas, 4-2, in a physical battle that saw several hard challenges. Hermann made two big saves early on but Lonestar struck first in the 16th minute.

Sounders FC equalized in the 23rd minute when Glenn Paden scored from a Travis Strawn assist. Paden added a second tally shortly before halftime on an assist from Aaron Kovar but the lead was short-lived as Lonestar tied the game in the 46th minute.

Seattle took the lead for good when Cox scored from 20-yards out in the 82nd minute. Darwin Jones secured the victory with a fourth goal in the 90th minute.

Michael Steele, who assisted on the fourth goal, scored the fifth from a feed by Schweitzer in the 71st minute. Klug and Crook each have five goals to date.

Fredy Montero Signs Extension, Transfer Completed
Sounders FC has signed forward Fredy Montero to a contract extension and completed the permanent transfer of his contract to the club and Major League Soccer, qualifying him as the club's third Designated Player. Per MLS and club policy, terms were not disclosed.

Montero, 23, has finished as the Sounders FC Gold Boot honoree in scoring each of his two seasons, totaling 22 goals and 17 assists in 56 league appearances. Only two other players-Conor Casey and Jeff Cunningham-have totaled more points the past two years.

Montero is a two-time MLS All-Star selection and was voted the 2009 MLS Newcomer of the Year after scoring 12 goals. He has made four appearances for the Colombia National Team.

This past season Montero was one of two players to finish among the MLS top ten in both goals (10/tied for 10th) and assists (10/tied for fifth). He became the second-youngest player in league history to achieve a double-double in goals and assists. Montero also tied for fifth in game-winning goals (4). He was fourth in both shots attempted and fouls suffered.

His nine consecutive matches with either a goal or an assist from June 5 through August 8 was the longest in the league this season. In addition, he scored the winning goal in Seattle's first competitive international match, a 1-0 win over El Salvador's Metapan, and in 2009 he scored the first goal in 2-1 victory over D.C. United in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final.

Montero received his Green Card earlier this month, granting him permanent resident status in the U.S. A native of Barranquilla, Colombia, he was originally signed on loan from Deportivo Cali in January of 2009.

Hurtado, Nkufo and Zakuani Receive Green Cards
The Seattle Sounders FC announced on Tuesday that defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, forward Blaise Nkufo and midfielder Steve Zakuani have received their U.S. Green Cards, granting all three players permanent resident status in the United States, effective immediately.

As residents, Hurtado, 26, Nkufo, 35, and Zakuani, 22, will no longer occupy International Player slots on the club's roster.

A native of Colombia, Hurtado was a finalist for 2009 MLS Defender of the Year and an MLS All-Star selection. He started nine of the first 10 matches in 2010 before sustaining a season-ending injury.

Nkufo finished as the team's third-leading scorer after arriving in midseason, following World Cup duty with the Swiss National Team. He scored the first hat trick in club history on September 18 at Columbus.

Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zakuani ranks second on the club with 14 goals and 10 assists in his two MLS seasons. A finalist for 2009 Rookie of the Year, he more than doubled his production in 2010, scoring 10 goals with six assists.

Alonso Voted MVP, Riley Defender of the Year
Osvaldo Alonso is the Sounders FC Most Valuable Player and James Riley is the team's Defender of the Year. The awards, both by a vote of their teammates, were announced at last week's Alliance Annual Meeting at Qwest Field. Riley was also named the Humanitarian of the Year and Fredy Montero received the Golden Boot by virtue of leading the team in scoring.

Alonso played an instrumental role in helping Sounders FC post the league's best record in the second half of the season. The holding midfielder started 21 of 23 appearances and matched his 2009 totals with one goal and three assists. Sounders FC was 11-3-5 in matches where Alonso played at least 45 minutes. The team allowed just 12 goals (0.80 GAA) in its final 15 matches while it allowed 23 goals (1.53 GAA) in the first 15. Alonso was on the field. Alonso also appeared in two U.S. Open Cup and five CONCACAF Champions League games, recording one assist in Champions League play.

Riley led all Sounders FC outfield players with 2,418 minutes played (3,273 in all competitions). The right back scored one goal, his first since his rookie season in 2005, in the final regular-season match in Houston. His three assists were the most of any Seattle defender and he added a fourth in Champions League play. He matched his career high with a total of five points.

One of only two players to finish in the top 10 in goals and assists this season, Montero received the team's Golden Boot for the second consecutive year. He tied Steve Zakuani with 10 goals but edged the winger with a team-high 10 assists. The Colombian striker had four game-winning goals, six in all competitions, and four game-winning assists. Montero scored (9) or assisted (7) on 16 of 19 MLS goals scored between April 22 and August 28, and earned at least one point in nine consecutive matches--the longest such stretch in MLS this season. He was voted Major League Soccer's Player of the Month for July when he contributed two goals and three assists in five games.

Honored as Major League Soccer's Humanitarian of the Month for October, Riley has embraced his role as community ambassador with purpose and enthusiasm. Since January 2010, he has made nearly 40 community appearances, including work with the Ronald McDonald House, the MLS W.O.R.K.S. Nothing But Nets campaign to fight malaria in Africa and the Sounders FC Bone Marrow Registry Drive. Riley, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, is also active with Komen for the Cure and Gilda's Club, raising awareness and encouraging fans to get involved in early screening through his public service announcements. Riley was an honorary coach for the Washington Special Olympics soccer team that finished fourth at the National Games. He is also a regular visitor to the Renton/Skyway Boys & Girls Club where he has fostered personal relationships with the kids and provides mentorship with his participation in the MicroSociety Program. .
