Christine Sinclair is the female choice for 2010 Canadian Players of the Year award

The Canadian Soccer Association announced today that Christine Sinclair is the female selection for the 2010 Canadian Players of the Year award. Sinclair was honoured in a vote shared by Canadian media (50%) and Canadian coaches who have taken the Canadian Soccer Association’s national course at the B and A levels (50%).

Sinclair of Burnaby, BC wins the award for the sixth-consecutive year. Her 2010 co-winner - a selection from the men’s national team - will be announced on Friday.

"Christine is a complete soccer player," said Canadian national head coach Carolina Morace. "She is smart, fast, she has good vision of the game and she is able to read the match excellently. She puts her skill and talent into the team and this allows the team to grow. I’m very proud to coach her."

In 2010, Sinclair enjoyed perhaps her finest season, winning titles for both her club and country. She steered FC Gold Pride from worst to first in Women’s Professional Soccer, scoring a pair of goals in the championship final in October. She then led Canada to a gold medal at the CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifier, scoring the lone goal in the championship final against Mexico in Cancún, Mexico.

In her second season with FC Gold Pride, Sinclair scored 10 goals and led the league with 9 assists. She formed a formidable duo with strike partner Marta as FC Gold Pride scored a league record 46 goals. Sinclair also played in the WPS All-Star Game and helped her team improve from a 4-6-10 record in their inaugural season to a 16-5-3 record in 2010 (wins-draws-losses).

In her 11th season with the Canadian national team, captain Sinclair has already scored 12 goals in 15 matches, with one last match to be played on 19 December. She has helped the team tie a national record with 13 wins (13-2-2) and establish a record with eight consecutive wins from 30 September to 12 December. She helped Canada win the Cyprus Women’s Cup and CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifier as well as reach the final of Brazil’s Torneio Internacional Cidade de São Paulo.

Also in 2010, Sinclair became Canada’s all-time leader in appearances (she now has 147) and she became just the 10th player to eclipse the 100-goal plateau in women’s international soccer. With 111 goals to her credit, she ranks sixth all-time on the international stage. She was again a finalist for the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year.

Earlier this week, Sinclair’s national teammate Jonelle Filigno was named a co-winner of the Canadian U-20 Players of the Year award (along with Ethan Gage) while Diamond Simpson was named a co-winner of the Canadian U-17 Players of the Year award (along with Bryce Alderson). Sinclair’s co-winner of the 2010 Canadian Players of the Year award will be announced on Friday.
